List of all country top-level domains

List of all country top-level domains – Ogni website possiede un indirizzo Internet. L’estensione di questo indirizzo si chiama TLD, ovvero dominio di primo livello. I national top-level domains refer to a very specific country, such as .en Is the extension for Italian domains.

ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) regulates the basic granting of all ccTLDs. The management and registration of a country's domains, on the other hand, is in the hands of the NIC (Network Information Center, also known as Registry); in Italy the jurisdiction is Registro.it (or simply NIC.it).

Characteristics of ccTLDs

National domain extensions generally refer back to the region or to the linguistic territory and are always composed of two letters of the Latin alphabet.

Only the internationalized national top-level domains, internationalized country code top-level domain (IDN or NDI), of some countries are an exception: for example are the different ccTLDs in Sri Lanka: in addition to the national extension .lk there are also TLDs ලංකා And .இலங்கை, which indicate the name of the island in Sinhalese and Tamil languages.

Using ccTLD for other purposes

In contrast to ccTLDs, generic top level domains (gTLDs) do not indicate any regional affiliation, but refer to a specific theme, such as .com Which is used for commercial/business sites or .org indicating an organization, and they can have more than two letters. But some ccTLDs are used for different purposes. Some examples:

  • Tivu.tv: there are many websites that use the domain of Tuvalu .tv. The reason is that the domain lends itself well to pointing to those sites that offer streaming services or relate to television programming.
  • Meet.me: literally means "Meet me" and is one of the domains of Montenegro most expensive ever sold (about $450,000). Meet.me is the name of a U.S. social network, which was able to fully place its brand name in the domain thanks to the Montenegro ccTLD.

special case among the national domain extensions is represented by the .tk. More than 30 million websites use this ccTLD, although the island state Tokelau, to which this extension is assigned, has no more than 2 million inhabitants. The mass registration of .tk is mainly motivated by the fact that in the past one could register an Internet address with this ccTLD completely free of charge. Even now the first 12 months after registration are completely free.

List of national top-level domains

All national domain extensions are listed below. The table not only shows to which countries or territories respective domains belong, but also whether the ccTLD has DNSSEC (Domain Name System Security Extensions).

In the last column find out whether you can assign an internationalized web address to a domain registered with the respective ccTLD. Internationalized domain names can be composed, in addition to Latin characters, of letters from other alphabets, such as umlauts or diacritical marks in the second-level domain (i.e., in the website name before the national top-level domain). An example would be a hypothetical German website müller-büromöbel.de, which contains several umlauts in the domain name.
